Values versus Resolutions

Mastering the Motivation Rollercoaster

Hi there gorgeous,

We are now in the New Year where many of us are setting new goals and resolutions.

We are journalling, posting on social media, sticking post it notes on the fridge, making a vision board and discussing our goals with anyone who is willing to listen to us rattle off a list!

I didn’t want to chat about New Year’s resolutions rather I wanted to explore the topic of motivation. You see, we think that the key to achieving these goals is through motivation however we need to dig a little deeper than that.

Motivation is a rollercoaster of emotions; it goes up and down and changes like the weather. So, we need to find something else more concrete to link our motivation to, so we can achieve our goals.

This is what we will be discussing in the Snack Bar today!

But before we dive in ...

A message from Rhoda Lucas

Is it still possible to live happily ever after?

Maybe, maybe not.

But what’s inevitable is that without mastering our body economy as mature women, we will gain fat, lose muscle, lose bone, and get weak.

And without mastering our body economy our health span will decrease along with our lifespan … but only 100% of the time.

Honestly, there is not one woman alive who won’t benefit from mastering her body economy.

Whether you’re an athlete, a health and fitness enthusiast, or a complete newbie … no one can escape the essential need for body economy mastery.

It’s even more important if your life is already impacted with other health problems, like injuries.

If you don’t fight back now, it’ll just get harder.

This month I have created a free video training series on mastering your body economy. Click here to access.

The Dynamic Trio for Motivation

When we set a goal, we usually need to find some motivation to begin the journey, but it doesn’t seem to last, so first we have to pin it to our values and principles.

For reference: Values refer to the beliefs and attitudes that guide our behavior, while principles are the rules and guidelines that dictate how we behave in specific situations.

Here are 3 tips to help achieve our goals despite the ups and downs of motivation:

  1. We need to link our motivation to achieve a goal to our values, so how does the motivation to achieve our goal align with our values?

I was talking to my son the other day and I asked him to mow the lawn. He didn’t want to (of course … teenagers) and I knew one of his values was keeping things ordered and tidy, because he has demonstrated this throughout his life.

I knew that I would have to discuss the chores around the home that needed to get done and linking them to his values would give me the motivation to do it.

Did he mow the lawn? Yes he did!

  2. Can you break down the goal into small achievable habits that you plan to do regularly and that you pencil into your diary? My gym sessions are in my iPhone planner, and I make an appointment with myself to go 4 times a week.

These are non-negotiable and my goal to get stronger is linked to a greater value. That value is to be the best version of myself in this lifetime which means staying as strong as I can for as long as I can.

  3. Understand that consistency is key to achieving anything, therefore set yourself up for success and put in place the thing that will help you stay the course.

My husband has a goal to walk 10,000 steps a day and if he doesn’t get out for his morning walk due to early meetings, he decided to put something in place to help him still achieve this.

He bought himself a standing desk treadmill and uses it religiously when he has a morning online meeting.

Steps from Today’s Issue

  1. Take some time to rediscover your key values in life. What do you stand for? What is important to you? How do you want to show up as a human being? What do you believe?

  2. Establish your goals for 2024. How do they align with your values? Link your motivation to achieve your goals to your values.

  3. Set out consistent habits that will get you to your goal that don’t rely on motivation.

However, motivation is far from static; it fluctuates like a rollercoaster ride, therefore, it becomes imperative to discover a more tangible connection to anchor our motivation, enabling us to achieve our aspirations.

Discovering our key values and principles and linking our motivation to these by creating new habits will ensure we achieve our goals.

Reflection

Take sometime today to sit and reflect on your core values and principles, then write down some goals that link to these. What habits can you put in place to help achieve these goals?
